Faculty Voices: Public Service As one of the major teaching sites of the UCSF School of Medicine, San Francisco General Hospital provides students a unique opportunity in one of the nation's finest public hospitals. UCSF faculty not only provide outstanding patient care to a diverse patient population, SFGH is also home to more than 150 UCSF principal investigators with a research budget of about $65 million. SFGH is owned by the City and County of San Francisco and has been operated in partnership with UCSF since 1873. "Working at a place like San Francisco General Hospital is a fantastic experience. You get a chance to practice medicine, and teach and pursue research in your chosen field. The patients have fascinating problems, and you get a chance to help make their lives better every day. It is truly a place that is as real as it gets." Andre Campbell, MD "SFGH makes training at UCSF superior to almost anywhere else. Most
academic training programs do not have top-notch public hospitals as fully
developed and equal partners in the training of residents. I chose to
train at UCSF for this reason. I have also remained at UCSF because of
the General. Our patients come from all over the world, from every walk
of life, speaking many languages and suffering from maladies common and
bizarre. We are compelled by the problems our patients confront, both
medical and social, Margaret Wheeler, MD "The Emergency Department at SFGH, the only trauma center in San
Francisco, has patients with common medical problems that all students
need to see and the most acute and rare illnesses and injuries seen anywhere
in the country. Teaching our bright, diverse and engaged students in this
environment attracts engaged, innovative and dedicated teachers. Our patients,
faculty and students continually provide support, stimuli and challenges
to each other. It's the perfect academic environment." Andy Bindman MD
