Our voice in medical education is especially important now.

Medical education is undergoing the greatest change since the Flexner report of 1910 provided the basis for modern medical education. This is in part driven by changes in health care that have altered the hospital-based learning environment. Our students' clerkships are not the clerkships that we remember.

UCSF is among the national leaders in this curriculum change. After seven years, the 'new curriculum' for first and second year students is established and producing outstanding graduates. Integration of basic and clinical sciences, longitudinal ambulatory experiences, and patient-centered learning are being expanded through pilot projects that continue these themes through all four years of medical school. Volunteer clinical faculty in community-based settings are becoming increasingly valued and now provide a significant percentage of core clinical teaching in years one and two.

Although the structure of medicine and the structure of the curriculum are changing, I believe that the essence of what we do has not changed. We continue to connect with students and generously share our offices, our time and our experiences to help a new generation of students learn what it means to become a physician. We also continue to learn from our students, including those from this new global, wired generation.

I am committed to increasing our voice in medical education during this time of curricular change. Our contributions are unique. We understand what students can best learn with us, through experiences that they might never have in any other clinical setting. We also understand the challenges of incorporating students into our community-based practices. We need to share this information through systematic, ongoing input into curriculum development and into related logistical, legal, and other aspects as well.

How can ACF best represent and support our clinical faculty during this time of new challenges? What would you like us to be doing? How would you like to participate?

I welcome your comments and if you like will share them on our developing website.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our annual banquet Wednesday, November 5 at the Omni Hotel.
