Scholarship Clinic for applicants for Innovations Funding

Scholarship Seminar
The Scholarship clinic, developed to address the needs of recipients of Academy Innovations Funding, has distributed written reviews of the curricular innovations proposals funded in January 2003. The next step, the Academy Scholarship seminar will be held on Monday September 15, from 3-5pm at Mount Zion. Dr. Susan Folkman of the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine will lead the seminar on enhancing the evaluation component of four Academy proposals. Although designed for the benefit of the authors of the proposals, the seminar will present principles applicable to other Academy Funding recipients, and others interested in medical education.
Please email Christine Khuu for more information, or to reserve a spot.

Who and when:
This service will be available upon request to proposal applicants between their email of intent and the final deadline for proposal submission (May 5 for this cycle)

Purpose of Scholarship consult in this setting:
Enhance the "scholarship-related" aspects of the proposal eg, curricular evaluation, measurability of results, or other issues that could enhance opportunities for publication or presentation.

Scope of Scholarship Clinic consultation:
The consultation will be focused on improving the scholarship
aspects of the proposal only. Therefore, we will NOT address the other Key Features that the Innovations Funding Committee will evaluate, are listed on the Academy Web site.

  • achievable results in one year
  • strongly consider projects from key areas of need
  • collaborative, integrative projects
  • efficacy of learning
  • "emerging areas" of curriculum
  • plan for continuation of funding

Although our efforts should enhance the proposal's quality, we want to make it clear that the Scholarship committee is separate from the Innovations Funding committee, and that following the Scholarship clinic's recommendations does not guarantee that a proposal will be funded.

Steps in the Scholarship consultation process:
Proposal authors will forward the current draft of their proposal to Christine Khuu, including a list of specific questions or areas to address. Afterreceiving the request, the Academy Scholarship Committee will review and make recommendations regarding the scholarship aspects of the proposal. At this early stage of proposal development, we anticipate a few paragraphs of comments and suggestions. After comments are collected, Dr. Pardo will meet with the proposal authors and share the comments and recommendations.
