Development of a Web Based curriculum and resource page for neurology residents
to teach clerkship students and subinterns at UCSF
Proposal to the Academy of Medical Educators
Yoon-Hee Cha; Leslie Gillum; Scott Josephson; Ann Poncelet, MD
Background:
During busy hospital rotations, it is often difficult for neurology residents
to address the clinical objectives of the Neurology clerkships. There are several
important barriers to Neurology resident teaching: 1) a comparatively short
clerkship length compared to most other core rotations, 2) a maximum two-week
overlap between students and residents, 3) a Neurology resident's responsibility
to simultaneously oversee ward, clinic, and consult patients 4) a comparatively
high ratio of students to residents (up to five students to one ward resident),
5) a chief residency year that is not a separately dedicated year to teaching
and administrative tasks. Because of these challenges residents often find it
difficult to individually compile the necessary teaching resources at each hospital.
Objective:
To provide a Web-based resource to aid residents in teaching subtinterns and
3rd year students in the Neurology Clerkships. Goals are to provide teaching
tools such as case modules, handouts, and journal articles specifically directed
to the clerkship goals in order to allow residents to efficiently provide convenient,
standardized, and effective teaching.
Projected time frame:
The project will take approximately 4-6months to compile the teaching modules
and to design the web site. Over 100 handouts have already been collected by
the Residency Director over recent years, and we will directly draw from this
vast resource as well as adding additional files. The goal is for a pilot version
to be integrated into the 2003-2004 year 3rd/ 4th year classes.
Quality Assurance:
All submissions to the website will be reviewed by the clerkship director. Each
submission will be reviewed on a six-month basis for additions/editions. One
or two residents each year will be appointed to be the ongoing administrator
for the project.
Assessing Effectiveness:
We will include a section on the E*value questionnaire which will allow students
to provide feedback on the new website. We will also track how many times the
website is accessed.
