In order to be renewed as a member of the Academy of Medical Educators, each member must maintain the high level of work in education and teaching that qualified him/her for membership; provide significant contributions toward advancing the Academy's mission; and regularly participate in Academy activities.
In order to document appropriate performance and activity:
- Each member submits an annual summary in May.
- Each member submits a continuation review report, along with the annual summary, in alternate years, depending on their year of induction into the Academy (even/odd years).
- The Academy director reviews annual summaries and discusses concerns with members who have limited Academy activity or a substantial reduction in educational responsibilities.
- The Membership working group evaluates the annual summary and continuation review report of each member up for review. Members who have not maintained the level or quality of educational contributions expected of Academy members, have not made significant contributions to the mission, and/or have not been sufficiently active within the Academy, will meet with the director. The member can choose to expand his/her activities in the subsequent, probationary year, or even withdraw from the Academy if career goals and activities are no longer consistent with the Academy's mission. In May of the following year, if the deficiencies noted the previous year have been corrected, membership continues and the review cycle is reinstituted. If inactivity persists, membership is discontinued.
- Former members whose membership has been terminated may choose to reapply in the future. Reapplications are treated as new applications and are subject to external review.
