Service Expectations

(Adopted from Growth & Service Working Group Recommendations, Dec. 2007)

Academy members are expected to contribute toward maintaining Academy functions and satisfying the Academy mission of improving education and teaching at UCSF. Service expectations of the Academy will be based on documentation of members' contributions within the following categories:

    1. Participation in Academy Administration and Activities
    2. Attendance at Academy Functions

While it is expected that Academy members continue to provide teaching of the highest caliber, direct teaching activities are not counted towards member service requirements.

1. Participation in Academy Administration and Activities. (Minimum 10 hours per year, excluding direct teaching, will be required beginning July 1, 2008.)

    • Serving on standing and ad hoc working groups

      Chair of the working group

      Member of the working group

    • Providing other administrative functions

Serving on search committee for an Academy-sponsored chair

      Mentoring potential applicants

    • Furthering faculty development and improving teaching through Academy-sponsored activities

Providing a session on the educator's portfolio

      Providing teaching consults

      Formal mentoring through the Academy

Peer review of educational scholarship (e.g., ESCape, Education Day)

    • Serving as a liaison at non-Academy activities
To qualify for service credit, presentations must relate to the Academy's mission, such as:

Representing the Academy in an academic conference

Presenting in departmental grand rounds in which the focus is on one of the Academy's missions (topics that are primarily clinical in nature would not qualify)

Conducting a department-based workshop on documentation of educator activities

    • Providing significant contributions to Academy-specific service priorities and goals
    • Pathways to Discovery and TIP-TOP

2. Academy Function Attendance. (>50% of activities over a 5-year period.)

    • Academy-wide Meetings (three or four per year)
    • Medical Education Day (one per year)
    • Induction of New Members (one per year)

Members will document their activities within the areas listed above in their Annual Summary to the Academy Director. The Academy staff will also maintain attendance records for activities listed in category 2; members will have the opportunity to correct/revise these figures before submitting their Annual Summary to the Director. It is expected that all members will demonstrate activity in category 1 (minimum 10 hours per year), and will attend more than 50% of the Academy functions listed in category 2 over a 5-year period. The Director will acknowledge in writing the contributions of members whose participation meets these standards upon receipt of the Annual Summary. S/He will meet with members whose activity does not meet the standard to explore ways to increase participation in the service mission of the Academy. Members whose contribution consistently falls below these expectations will be excused from the Academy.

Members who provide substantial services to the Academy and wish to have a certain amount of their salary carried by the Academy on a percent-effort basis should apply to the Academy Director for consideration. The decision to provide salary support for these services is at the discretion of the Academy Director and the Academy Executive Committee.
