Re: Academy Service Priorities and Opportunities, 2009-2010
These are extraordinarily challenging times for Academy members, faculty in general, and the UCSF community at large. In recognition, we are striving to balance our need to preserve a functional and cohesive community of educators with sensitivity to the tremendous productivity and time pressures many of our members are experiencing.
We believe it is important to maintain the attendance and service expectations established two years ago. However, this year we will interpret broadly the ways members might meet their service obligation.
Rather than generating a list of service priorities from which members choose, we ask each of you to reflect proactively about where your interests and commitments lie. What educational activities are you planning to engage in anyway, on a departmental or curricular level, which could be accomplished with an "Academy flavor"? In this case, "double-dipping" is fine!
What might count:
- Mentoring a junior faculty member, formally or informally: talk about the Academy and actively involve mentees in our work and/or programs.
- Inviting and accompanying a non-member to an Academy event (e.g., seasonal meeting, Celebration or Education Day).
- Facilitating faculty development activities, on a departmental level or under the auspices of the OME/AME or OME/GME teaching workshops.
- Presenting at one of the Academy's seasonal meetings.
- Contributing to curricular development initiatives.
What won't count:
- Direct teaching (as important as it is, there is nothing particularly "brand-able" about our direct teaching).
- Presenting in your professional area of expertise (e.g., specialty-focused talks unrelated to the Academy's mission or activities).
As always, two excellent ways to fulfill service obligations are serving as a TOP mentor and actively participating in an Academy working group.
Please contact us if you have any questions or feedback. Many thanks for your continued engagement and active participation in the Academy's work.
