1. Does Academy membership come with funding?

No, Academy membership is an honor in its own right and is expected to help at the time of merit or promotion review. There are a small number of partially endowed chairs, providing 20-35% salary support, some belonging entirely to the Academy and some shared between departments and the Academy. The Academy also has funds in its operating budget to support teaching and educational innovation in the form of faculty stipends.

2. How will Academy members find time for Academy service obligations if Academy does not provide salary support for all members?

The "citizenship" activities for the Academy are not onerous, but, like departmental service, faculty participation in the undertakings of the Academy are essential in helping it advance its mission. Applicants for Academy membership should be willing to attend meetings and events, participate in one or more of the Academy's working groups or serve as a liaison to an academic department. Refer to the Academy's Expectations and Service

3. If I am primarily a teacher of residents and fellows, can I apply for Academy membership?

Teachers whose primary work is with residents and fellows may apply for membership in the Academy. However, the Academy was established to support and advance pre-doctoral medical education; thus, exceptional residency/fellowship level teachers who can also make a compelling argument that their work with residents/fellows benefits UCSF medical students directly or indirectly will be accepted.

4. Should I include the teaching and education work that I do with residents on my Academy application materials?

The mission of The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators is to advance the teaching of medical students. Therefore, the documentation of outstanding accomplishment should emphasize the candidate's work with medical students or significant impact on medical student education. The Academy is supportive of all good teaching and recognizes that those who teach medical students often also teach residents. Please document all your work educational endeavors.

5. Must a faculty member have achieved a certain academic rank, e.g. Associate Professor, to be eligible for Academy membership?

No. The focus is on outstanding accomplishment, not rank.

6. Are any types of faculty particularly prioritized for Academy membership? For example, can social scientists and others with degrees other than the M.D. be members?

Any faculty member in the School of Medicine who is actively engaged in teaching medical students, or has significant impact on pre-doctoral education, is eligible for membership in The Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators.
