Harvard Macy Programs

The Harvard Macy Institute is an organization devoted to training and innovation in the field of health science education. The Institute, which is housed at Harvard University in Boston, offers two outstanding professional development programs every year. They are:

  1. The Program for Educators in the Health Sciences program, which has two installments. One takes place in early January for 11 days. The second is in late May for 6 days. It is intended for healthcare professionals who want to become more knowledgeable as educators and more skillful as educational leaders. The deadline for application is in mid-September. Educators from UCSF's School of Medicine who have attended include Carrie Chen, Pree Basaviah, Karen Hauer, Ellen Hughes, Sharad Jain, Bob Kamei, Shieva Khayam-Bashi, Tim Kelly, Helen Loeser, Jessica Muller, Ann Poncelet, Lowell Tong and Leslie Zimmerman.

  2. The Leaders in Healthcare Education program takes place in mid June for ~5 days. It is intended for educational leaders who are interesting in making major institutional changes. The deadline for application is usually in mid-March (March 24, 2008). Educators from UCSF's School of Medicine who have attended include Molly Cooke, Haile Debas, Helen Loeser, Ann Poncelet and Lowell Tong.

Departments, the Office of Medical Education (OME) and the Academy jointly support Academy members who attend these two Harvard Macy programs. Information about the application process, including deadlines, is given below. Please be aware that a detailed timeline flollows the instructions. The Harvard Macy Institute website has more information: http://www.harvardmacy.org/default.asp.

To apply for support for the Harvard-Macy PHYSICIAN AND HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATORS or the LEADERS IN HEALTHCARE EDUCATION programs, please note the following procedure:

  1. Applicants alert their departments of their interest in attending a Harvard Macy program.

  2. Applicants formally signal their interest in a letter to the Office of Medical Education (OME) by the date indicated in the appropriate time-line below. Each letter of intent should describe the work to be undertaken under the auspices of the Harvard Macy program and should confirm that their department is aware of their attend and willing to provide 50% of the required funding.

  3. OME forwards applications from Academy members to the Academy of Medical Educators (AME) for consideration of AME support.

  4. The Associate Dean for Curricular Affairs and the AME Membership working group prioritize potential applicants and discuss departmental support with the candidates' department chairs or other appropriate individuals.

  5. Applicants are notified of OME/AME and departmental ability to provide support.

  6. Each chosen applicant requests and obtains a letter (or a signed form) from his/her department committing to 50% of the cost of the program - tuition, travel, housing, and meals.

It is expected that the applicant's department will initially pay for tuition and all appropriate expenses. OME/AME will cover their 50% by transfer when program is completed and all expenses have been paid.

  7. Upon receipt of the department letter (or signed form) by OME/AME, the applicant is given a letter (or signed form) from AME or OME committing to support the other 50%.

  8. OME/AME advises Harvard Macy to expect applications from approved UCSF applicants and assures support.

Letter of Intent to OME should be submitted to Victoria Ruddick ruddickv@medsch.ucsf.edu. Questions regarding the application process should be addressed to Christine Khuu in AME at 514-2282 or khuuc@medsch.ucsf.edu.
