Matching Funds for the Creation of Endowed Chairs in Support of Teaching

Established Chairs

The matched endowed chair program has been one of the Academy's great successes.

Based on a desire to create a critical mass of teachers who have the interest, experience, training, and time to direct the process of educating medical students, former Dean Haile T. Debas committed the funds to develop the matched endowed chair program, the goal of which was to develop 20 chairs over five years. This goal has been achieved.

In this program, the dean's office contributed up to $250,000 as matching funds for the establishment of each endowed chair in the program. "Matching" in this context means that a department allocates at least $250,000 before the dean contributes funds ($500,000 is the minimum for an endowed chair).

With all twenty chairs now fully established, more than $10 million is committed to this program, and the income is working to support medical student education. It is our hope that more funds will become available in the future to establish additional chairs.

All chair holders are members of the Academy and play a vital role in serving as liaisons between the Academy and their academic departments.
